Dear Naija Author, what is your Name?
My name is Adesuwa Nwokedi, but I write using the pseudonym ‘The Fertile Chick.’
Dear Naija Author, please introduce yourself!
My name is Adesuwa Nwokedi, aka The Fertile Chick. My writing journey started by accident in 2016 but I haven’t been able to stop ever since. Right now, I’m juggling my writing with a day job and being a wife and mom to three kids.
Dear Naija Author, how many genres have you written? How many books have you written?
I’m a hopeless romantic, so it’s no surprise that romance is my genre of choice. I have written 14 books and counting.
What is the best book you have written so far?
I honestly have no favourite amongst my titles. They’re all special to me, but ‘Golibe’ and ‘Where is the Love?’ do hold an extra special place in my heart. I’m also really loving the ‘Ginika’s Bridesmaids’ series I’m working on now.
What is the Most Complex book you’ve ever written?
The most complex book would have to be ‘You, Me…Them’ because it touched on very delicate issues of marriage and faith.
Describe your journey as a writer
My journey as a writer has been phenomenal. What started as an accident has become this fantastic journey with so much more peaks than valleys. I’m loving every minute of it!
Dear Naija Author, tell us a little about your book!
The Name of my book is Ginika’s Bridesmaids Book One – Ara, and it is about a girl named Ara. Ara is left heartbroken when her childhood sweetheart, Oye, leaves her for another woman. But she is unwilling to let go of the only man she had ever loved and is determined to do everything she can to get him back. When C.J, who is also having relationship problems with his girlfriend, comes up with the suggestion to pretend to be a couple, to get their exes jealous, Ara jumps at it gladly, both of them confident that this will be exactly the kick the people in their lives need to realize how much they love them. But what begins as taking a few pictures for the ‘gram soon becomes a journey of discovery for Ara; of herself and of the very true meaning of the word love.
What role does self-publishing have in your writing career?
Self-publishing has been my mode of operation since writing my first book. I haven’t explored any other options, and so far it has worked for me.
What problems did you experience while writing?
With my earlier books, I didn’t story-board and depended on the stories developing as they went progressed. But I found myself always getting stuck midway. Now that I story-board and outline the story from start to finish right from the very beginning, I no longer have that problem.
Advice to aspiring writers
Follow your heart. Write only about what your passionate about, what you would actually look forward to sitting down for hours on end writing. Avoid a flock mentality.
The Writer, who became an Engineer, who became an Investment Banker, who became a Fertility Spokesperson, who became…a Writer. That has been the journey of Adesuwa Nwokedi, aka The Fertile Chick.
